South Canal Street water main project nears completion
GREENE – The water main project which has caused traffic detours in the vicinity of Greene’s High School and Middle School campus for the last month is expected to be completed within the next two weeks, according to the village’s superintendent of public works.
Since Aug. 17, South Canal Street has been reduced to one lane south of Page Street and its intersection with South Chenango Street Extension has been closed, as the Village of Greene’s highway and water crews have worked to replace the water main along that section.
The good news is that the work is nearing completion, and the street will soon be reopened to two-way traffic.
Work on the main itself should be completed by the end of September, reported Public Works Superintendent Bob Nowalk. Repaving has been slated for the first week of October.
Nowalk and his crew have spent the last month installing an 8-inch water main pipe to replace the two existing mains which run along that section of South Canal Street. The works was necessary, he explained, because of the large number of breaks experienced in that vicinity in recent years.
“We’ve had five to seven breaks in the last three years in that section,” Nowalk reported, during each of which residents along the street have suffered water outages, and in at least one case, basement level flooding.
The public works official attributed the high incidence along that particular line to the depth at which it was originally installed. “It wasn’t deep enough,” he explained.
According to Nowalk, the final phase of work will involve “charging the line” – filling it with water – and disinfecting it, before it is connected to the rest of the water system. The new main will also need to be connected to the eleven houses along that section, as well as the school.
Residents will be with out water for a short time while their house is connected, he explained, but notifications will be made before hand and efforts will be made to minimize the impact. Crews will also work around the school schedule to avoid water interruptions while students are in the building.
