Early snow day at B-G?
BAINBRIDGE – Thanks to an early morning electrical glitch, middle and high school students in the Bainbridge-Guilford Central School district had the day off on Wednesday. Students were back in class on Thursday, with no further interuptions of service expected, according to the school’s top administrator.
“Everything has been up and running today,” said Superintendent Karl Brown in a phone interview yesterday.
According to Brown, the outage occurred at the middle/high school campus around 2 a.m. on Wednesday. At the time it was discovered, the cause was unknown.
While the district originally decided to simply delay opening by an hour, the cause of the power outage had yet to be determined before a decision needed to be made about whether or not to close school.
Both NYSEG and an independent electrical contractor, Nelcorp, were called in to investiage the problem, Brown said, which they were able to identify as related to a sensitivity switch setting which caused the main line breaker to trip when a freezer’s compresser unit malfunctioned in the school’s cafeteria.
Once it was determined that there was no risk of fire, power was restored to the building at approximately 9 a.m., but at that point the district had already made the call to cancel classes for middle and high school students.
“Unfortunately, the decision really had to be made by 7:30,” Brown explained.
The district’s elementary students were unaffected by the outage, with classes continuing as usual at both Greenlawn and Guilford Elementary.
Whether or not the missed instructional time will be deducted from the district’s alloted snow days, remains to be determined.
“That’s the million dollar question,” said Brown, explaining that as a district they would make whatever adjustments necessary to compensate.
