Primary races in Sherburne and Coventry still undecided

SHERBURNE – With absentee ballots still uncounted, three local primary races are still too close to call.
All the results of Tuesday’s primaries are still unofficial, with a final tally for all contests to be announced Tuesday. That was not reported in a story Wednesday.
Currently, based on the number of absentee ballots received so far by the county Board of Elections, the contests for Sherburne Town Justice, one Coventry Town Council seat, and Coventry Highway Superintendent are still in contention.
In Sherburne, John R. Powell holds a five vote lead over John M. Staley, 93 to 88. There are 15 absentee votes in that district remaining to be counted, and 12 more that haven’t been returned. They have until Monday to get in, but have to be post-marked Sept. 14, election officials said.
In Coventry, 10 votes separate George Broeg, 116, and John B. Sanford, 106, for the second Republican ticket in the town council election. Two votes stand between Richard M. Granger, Jr. and Gary J. Petroski, 125 to 123. Ten out of eleven absentee votes in that district have yet to be counted.
County-wide there are 57 absentees out, with 36 returned.
