Special teams play lifts Oxford

OXFORD – All it took was 13 seconds for Oxford to quickly regroup from a stunning turnover and Harpursville’s tying touchdown.
Jeremy Nelson returned a kickoff 89 yards for the go-ahead – and winning – touchdown giving the Blackhawks an 18-12 victory over the Hornets Friday night.
An inopportune miscue for Oxford came deep deep in its own territory, and allowed the Hornets to convert a 16-yard TD drive. Ryan Dalpiaz’s one-yard sneak knotted the game up with 5:14 to play.
Nelson, who returned a kickoff for a TD last season that keyed a season-ending win over UV-Edmeston, hit a seam in his blocking wedge, and raced untouched down the left sideline.
“We need big plays out of Jerr, and he came through for us in a clutch situation,” said Oxford coach Mike Chrystie. “It says a lot about this team. We hung in there through adversity, and we got out of a rut. We had to turn it around as a team.”
Oxford (1-1, 1-2) desperately needed the win given the future playoff implications in Section IV’s Class D. After taking the lead for good, the Blackhawks’ defense made two big defensive stops to snuff out Harpursville’s comeback effort.
On the Hornets’ ensuing possession after the Nelson TD, H’ville’ quarterback Ryan Dalpiaz was hurried into a pair of incompletions, and on third down, he was sacked by junior Alex Marin.
The Blackhawks’ offense had a shaky series following a punt surviving a fumble and a near interception before punting the ball back with 2:46 left in the game.
Getting the ball at midfield, Dalpiaz had no shot at a completion, all of that due to the Blackhawks’ relentless quarterback pressure. Defenders Marin and Zach Barry met for an 11-yard sack on second down, Dalpiaz misfired on third down, and Barry wrapped up Dalpiaz on fourth down forcing a Derrick Head interception to cinch up the victory.
“Our defensive line controlled the game tonight,” Chrystie said. “They put up 12 points, and compared to what we gave up the first two games, (the defense) did a great job.”
Oxford’s most efficient drive of the season came on its opening possession. Booker Davis, who rushed for 152 yards and 31 carries, ran four straight times gaining a first down and putting Oxford in Harpursville territory. Quarterback John Wonka hit Nelson down the right side for a 34-yard pass play to set up Davis’s 14-yard scoring run.
Harpursville tied the game on the first play of the second quarter running a quick-hitting counter up the middle. Cole Canfield, on his first carry of the game, dashed 51 yards for the tying score.
Oxford picked up the momentum in the second half. After Harpursville gained a first down, Dalpiaz went deep down the left sideline, and the pass was picked off by freshman Paul Wonka.
Oxford capitalized on Harpursville turnover moving 58 yards for the go-ahead score on six plays. John Wonka found Nelson between two Harpursville defenders for a 40-yard TD hookup lifting the hosts to a 12-6 lead.
John Wonka finished 6-for-12 for 168 yards, and Nelson had 91 yards receiving.
“We got up and let them back in the game,” Chrystie said. “Last year and in the previous two games this year, we would have gotten down on ourselves and crumbled. We hung together tonight and made big plays when we needed to.”
Oxford plays at UV-Edmeston on Friday.
