Common Cents thrift shop moving to new location

OXFORD – The Common Cents Thrift Shop is moving to the ‘heart of the Village’ at 4 LaFayette Park. Currently located in the United Methodist Church (UMC) on South Washington Avenue, Common Cents will remain open at that location through the end of September. It will close Oct.1-3 to move in between new neighbors, 6 On The Square and Hoppie’s, in the former ‘Creative Stamping’ location. You are invited to celebrate with them.
Common Cents will be open in its new location on Tuesday, Oct. 6. Don’t miss the Grand Opening ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 10 a.m. Festivities will include a ribbon cutting, dignitaries, a shop blessing, free drawing, give-aways and refreshments. DJ Jim Baldwin will be the Master of Ceremonies and will provide his professional musical touch. Please come to help celebrate and check out the new look.
Since 2006, Common Cents, (formerly known as the Community Clothes Closet), has enjoyed the spacious UMC Fellowship Hall. (Many will remember that prior to this; the much smaller Clothes Closet was upstairs in the Oxford Memorial Library.) Many thanks to the United Methodist Church for providing such generous space for Common Cents over the years. Also a special thanks to all those who have helped make it possible to move to this prime location.
In its new surroundings, Common Cents, sponsored by the Church Women United (CWU), will be more like a traditional thrift shop with a store front and display window. Renovations have been made especially for the thrift shop and a ramp at the rear door makes it handicap accessible. The new store will offer racks upon racks of second hand discoveries! There will be gently used clothing, shoes, bedding, dishes, games, toys, and more. The CWU volunteers are confident that many more families will be shopping at the new location to take advantage of the incredible bargains at the store.
Common Cents also has a mascot, “Penny the Cent-apede.” Penny (the illustration) will serve as a “brand” on handouts and ads reminding people to “Use common sense and save cents at Common Cents!”
Common Cents will be open more days to accommodate more shoppers. Effective Tuesday, October 6th, it will be open Tuesdays thru Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. -1 p.m.
People from all communities are welcome. Proceeds from sales and donations will benefit the Oxford Food Pantry (OFP). The OFP, serves the Oxford community, and is available through local church referrals.
NOTE: Sign-ups for Food Sense deliveries will be at the new Thrift Shop and pick-up will continue to be at the United Methodist Church of Oxford on 36 South Washington Avenue, between 1 and 2 p.m., on the fourth Saturday of each month.
Contact Joyce Ardron at 843-9747 for more information, should you have items to donate, or to volunteer. Volunteers are always needed for staffing the store.
