Flat tire leads police to 60 pounds of marijuana
OXFORD – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested three men early Monday after a patrol stopped to help them fix a flat tire only to discover four garbage bags filled with more than $70,000 worth of recently-harvested marijuana inside.
Daniel J. Fahs, 31, and 24-year-old Joshua D. Tracy, both of State Highway 235 in Afton, along with 35-year-old Robert C. Morley, were charged with second criminal possession of marijuana, a D felony. The deputy recorded that he pulled up to help the men at 3:10 a.m. on County Route 32 in the Town of Oxford Monday while on routine road patrol.
“Just by luck, a passing patrol spotted the pick-up along the roadway with a flat tire. As with any stranded vehicle at that time of night, the deputy pulled over to assist and smelled a strange odor,” said Sheriff Ernest R. Cutting.
Sheriff’s Lt. James Lloyd said investigators uncovered between 50 to 60 pounds of marijuana that was harvested from an unknown location.
“After it’s dried out, the approximate street value is about $70,000,” he added.
The three men were arraigned in Town of Oxford Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of $5,000 bail.
