Post reports on her fourth and final year as Summer School principal

NORWICH – When Jennifer Post talks about the highlights of her summer, she’s not talking about vacation. She’s reflecting on the success of her fourth and final year as principal of Norwich’s Summer School Program.
“The program has grown in leaps and bounds,” said Superintendent Gerard O’Sullivan, as Post launched into a recap of the program during the Norwich City School District’s board of education meeting Wednesday night.
According to Post, 116 kindergarten through fifth grade students attended the five-week program held at Gibson throughout the month of July and into the beginning of August. This was an increase over the 94 students who attended last year, but the number is even more impressive considering last summer’s session included sixth grade students as well. Those sixth graders are now served through a separate program offered at the Norwich Middle School.
“It was a wonderful summer,” reported Post, citing the collaborative and creative efforts of her summer school team. That team consisted of 14 faculty members from Gibson, Perry Browne and the Middle School as well as six aides, a secretary and a school nurse.
Classes met each day from 8 a.m. to noon Mondays through Fridays throughout the program. Each day included a 90-minute block for English Language Arts, a 20-minute recess, 30 minutes of reading for 100 Book Challenge, and 50 minutes for math, the administrator explained. Breakfast and lunch were offered through the USDA-funded Summer Food Service Program, and transportation was provided by the district.
Post said she encouraged each of the educators to “get as wild” as they wanted to with their lesson plans, and to incorporate technology as much as possible.
“Our intent is to maintain the growth the best that we can,” Post explained. To quantify their progress, students were tested at both the beginning and the end of the program. They were also assessed on a weekly basis, she added.
As she reviewed the data gathered with the board, she pointed out that all but one grade level had achieved some level of growth between the pre and post tests, but that the results for that group still fell within an acceptable range.
Post was appointed as the principal of Perry Browne in August, and will therefore be stepping down from her position with the summer school program. She is “ready and willing” to help the next person to take on that role continue the successful program, she said.
