Greene passes toughest test

Greene 26, Whitney Point 14
GREENE – Facing its most difficult test of the season, Greene passed the exam, although not without a few difficulties.
Scott Gorton passed for 203 yards and three scores as the Trojans broke in their new field-turf athletics facility successfully.
“We expected it would be a tough game,” said Greene coach Tim Paske. “It was our first game on the new field, and Whitney Point was just as excited as we were. They were definitely a good test for us.”
Greene initiated the scoring in the second quarter finishing off a nine-play, 58-yard drive on Gorton’s six-yard TD pass to Nick Wilcox. After a Whitney Point fumble two possessions later, Greene needed only two plays to cover 32 more yards. Gorton’s 20-yard strike to Kevin Gilroy upped the lead to 14-0.
The Trojans saw their momentum take a step back at the end of the half. Near midfield, Gorton’s screen pass was intercepted by Tyler Donnelly, who raced 48 yards for the score. A successful two-point conversion closed the halftime gap to six points.
The Trojans and Golden Eagles traded touchdowns early in the third quarter. Greene went 14 plays to start the second half ending with a Kurt Shear one-yard TD run.
The Golden Eagles would then execute the first TD drive against Greene’s first-team defense this season. Donnelly broke several tackles on his way to a 23-yard TD jaunt.
Gorton went back on top to give Greene a 12-point advantage. He hit Brendan Kinne on a 44-yard scoring toss for the final margin.
Greene finished with 388 yards of total offense, and held Whitney Point’s rushing attack – one that averaged over 300 yards per game – to 131 yards.
“We had some more opportunities to score in this game,” Paske said. “Overally we executed pretty well and our yards (rushing and passing) were evenly split. We did our jobs, we just need to do them on every play.”
Tyler Beckwith’s 77 yards rushing led a balanced Greene attack. The Trojans (2-0, 4-0) play at Walton (2-2) on Saturday.

Oxford 39, UV-Edmeston 6
NEW BERLIN – Just moments after UV-Edmeston put its first points on the board and tied up Oxford at six-apiece, the Blackhawks immediately grabbed the lead back.
Jeremy Nelson returned a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown, his second kickoff return for a TD in as many weeks, and the Blackhawks evened their record at 2-2 on the season on Friday.
Quarterback John Wonka had three TD runs, all on quarterback sneaks, and freshman running back Paul Wonka came off the bench for injured starter Booker Davis to rush for 146 yards and one touchdown.
UV-Edmeston had a glimmer of hope after Ian Davis returned a kickoff in the first quarter 65 yards down the right sideline to tie the game. The Storm offense, still without a touchdown, finished with just 66 total yards. “We had a good game plan based on what we saw on film, they just took us out of it early in the game,” said UV-E coach Jack Loeffler. “They pounded the ball with their running game, and they really hurt us on the outside.”
Brandon Shaw added a 26-yard TD run for the Blackhawks, who moved out to a 33-6 halftime lead. Wonka’s TD runs were two, one, and one yards.
Paul Wonka scored on a two-yard run in the third quarter, the only points of the second half

B-G 44, Deposit 26
DEPOSIT – Bainbridge-Guilford looked every bit the Class D playoff contender. The Bobcats scored on their first possession of the second half to take a two-touchdown lead, and built that advantage to as many as 25 points in a key road win Saturday.
Winners of three straight, the Bobcats (2-0, 3-1) stuck with their inside running game, and tossed in some timely pass plays to roll over the Lumberjacks’ defense. “We just went with our bread-and-butter type stuff,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “Our kids blocked well and ran hard. We had some nice chunks of yards from Dakota Vandermark and Daren Terpstra.”
B-G created a 22-14 lead at the half late scoring late in the second quarter. On a fourth-and-10 from the Deposit 20, Bobcats quarterback Justin Pepper connected with Brandon Harrington, who made a diving catch in the endzone for the touchdown. Harrington, in his first game of the season, added an interception on defense, and was charged with one-on-one coverage on Deposit’s top offensive weapon, Darin Wignall.
Wignall picked up some yards, but wasn’t the game-changer he has been in earlier weeks. “I thought this was a pretty dominant performance for us, and just a great game,” Mattingly said. “We knew if we wanted to move on this season, we had to beat good teams at their place. Right from the get-go, we were mentally and physically prepared to go. It was just an excellent win.”
Billy Holden had four short TD runs for the Bobcats, and Dakota Vandermark rushed 59 yards for a score in the first quarter to put the Bobcats in front. Vandermark finished with 102 yards rushing, while fullback Daren Terpstra gained 115 yards on 23 carries.
B-G hosts Livingston Manor on Friday in a non-league game.
