County’s 20-year-old ethics policy causes state comptroller’s audit

NORWICH – Chenango County supervisors were notified last week that their government would be audited by the New York State Comptroller’s Office due to an “ethics oversight.”
Board of Supervisors Chairman Richard B. Decker met yesterday in a closed door meeting with officials from the Comptroller’s office.
The county’s ethics law is dated 1990. Chairman of the county’s Safety & Rules Committee Janice O’Shea said her committee was recently asked to create a subcommittee that would review the policy.
“It came up in a discussion over the selection of a consultant for the natural gas committee,” she said, “but there is not a particular situation that they (the state’s auditors) are looking at.”
A call to the Comptroller’s press office was not returned by deadline.
Town of Smyrna Supervisor James B. Bays has requested during board meetings that Chairman Decker address what Bays called “an outdated policy.”
Decker said he didn’t know whether the law was outdated or needed to be revised.
