Norwich PD reaching out to public via Twitter
NORWICH – The Norwich Police Department is now using the networking site Twitter as another way to dispense information to the public.
“This is just one more outreach effort for us to use to get information out and to request information to be sent to us” said Police Chief Joseph Angelino. “We recognize that most people carry cell phones and this is another way we can reach them.”
The police department’s recently created presence on Twitter can be found at: http://twitter.com/NorwichPolice.
An example of how this will be used took place Sept. 22, when a motor vehicle accident caused a power outage.
“When the power went out the desk sergeant was overwhelmed with telephone calls asking ‘Why is the power out?’” recalled Angelino.
The police department used the power outage as a first use of Twitter. During the power outage the police Twitter page was not public knowledge and only had a handful of followers, but information was transmitted, including photographs from the scene for public viewing and awareness.
“In that instance, if we had a larger following I’m sure the telephone calls would have been reduced,” said Angelino. “The more people who follow us, the better. This technology would have got our message about the accident out quickly.”
Twitter is a simple webpage to use, with no costs to use the service. Information sent from the police department can be received by e-mail, text message or from the site itself.
The City’s Emergency Management Office has been using Twitter since late spring of this year, and just recently started a Facebook page, both of which have been received with positive feedback from the public.
