4-H Week: It's a family affair

My last four years at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chenango County have provided something I wish I could have had sooner – a 4-H experience. Although I never had the chance to become a member when I was a kid, I’ve learned that being a part of 4-H is more than projects, awards, and county fair – 4-H is a family. Your club members, leaders, and volunteers become an important part of your 4-H career. The rewards, the experience, and the memories stay with you for the rest of your life.
4-H harbors a sense of community amongst 4-H members ages 5 to 19. Members have club meetings, activities and projects, attend field trips, and compete at the county fair. 4-H project areas such as photography, dairy, and gardening require true dedication and provide a creative outlet for 4-H members. Beyond that, they know they have fellow 4-H’ers they can count on, no matter where they go. The 4-H Alumni network is one of the largest in the country. As Chenango County 4-H’er, Kassie Abrams explained, “By doing different activities in the [4-H] program, I have made many new friends from all across the state.”
In addition, 4-H staff provides a great deal of support for leaders and members. We always hope to encourage growth and devotion within Chenango County 4-H. The prep work for county fair, field trips and other 4-H events is hard; but when it comes time, it’s always great to see smiling 4-H faces enjoying what we have all worked toward achieving. 4-H improves the lives of all who are a part of it because that is the 4-H motto – “To make the best better.”
My only hope is that some day with a family of my own, I too can give back to the 4-H family - although I already feel as if I “bleed green” as a part of Chenango County 4-H. Thanks to all those who have made my 4-H experience so real and welcoming – 4-H staff, volunteers, leaders, and most importantly, our Chenango County 4-H’ers.
