New Berlin police led on a short but fast chase
NEW BERLIN – The New Berlin Police Department was drawn in a high speed chase in excess of a 100 miles per hour Friday which led to the apprehension of the vehicle’s Pittsfield driver and officers discovering a small amount of drugs in his car.
The driver, 18-year-old Schuyler M. Schmidt, was issued multiple tickets for various vehicle and traffic law violations that included speeding, failing to comply with a lawful order and unsafe turning. He also faces misdemeanor criminal charges of reckless driving and unlawful possession of marijuana.
Police said the incident began when a patrol car observed Schmidt traveling north on State Route 8 in the Town of New Berlin at a high rate of speed. When the patrolman attempted to pull the vehicle over, Schmidt allegedly refused to comply and tried to flee police.
