Cyclones ‘A team' clinches Tri-Valley division title
NORWICH – The Cyclones “A” team won the Tri-Valley League Eastern Division Championship Sunday at Alumni Field with a convincing 37-7 win over the undefeated Utica Proctor Bulldogs.
The Cyclones’ line dominated play on both sides of the ball holding the speedy Bulldogs to three first downs and a kick-off return for their only touchdown. The Norwich offense controlled the game and the clock with its running game.
The Cyclones opened the scoring with a safety in the first quarter. Michael Sutton scored on a four-yard run in the second, and had a 15-yard TD pass to John Marvin for a 16-7 halftime lead.
Michael Oralls chewed up the Bulldogs’ defense and had two third-quarter TD runs of four and five yards. Trent Stone add a 20-yard touchdown in the fourth.
Randy Stokes kicked two extra points, and Sutton ran one in. Frank Garcia, Keegan Franklin, and Sutton ran well behind the impressive Cyclones line.
On defense, Spencer Stone blocked a punt and recovered a fumble, Matt Burke had a fumble recovery, and Stokes added a dazzling interception return to the 10. Matt Craig, Garcia, Storm Cook, Marvin, and Sutton played big defense as well.
The Cyclones’ “B” team fell 37-14 to possibly the best B squad in upstate New York.
Alex Weaver stripped the ball from the Bulldogs at the two and recovered the fumble in the endzone for a Cyclones’ touchdown. Jake Walsh scored on a five-yard pass from Jordan Vinal with Killian Benedict kicked a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter.
Benedict, Weaver, Carlos Ithier, and Cameron Edwards ran hard against the stiff and speedy Bulldogs defense.
Landon Cummings, Jon Manwarren, Vinal, Weaver and Matt Parella played hard “D,” with Walsh adding an interception.
The Cyclones’ “C” team kept their title hopes alive with a 34-19 victory over Utica.
Cole Rifanburg had a field day with four TDs and two conversion passes to Carter Hubbard. Hubbard also had two rushing conversions.
A 35-yard pass play from Rifanburg to Hubbard set up the last Cyclones score, a two-yard plunge by Dalen Geislinger.
On defense, Marcus Benjamin and Paden Burlison had fumble recoveries, with Cameron Ivan, Ben Scheer, Andrew Barry, Geislinger, Hubbard and Rifanburg came up with big defense
The Cyclones “D” team remained unblemished in a non-scoring game with the Bulldogs.
The Cyclones cheerleaders competed in the Tri-Valley League Championship at the Utica Auditorium on Saturday, and for the second year in a row, the Cyclones came home with the sportsmanship trophy as voted on by the 27 squads in the league.
All of three squads did well in the competition, with the “B team” finishing first overall, and the A team finishing fifth. The A and B squads will compete in the state championships in Albany on Saturday, Oct. 17.
The Cyclones travel to Oneida Saturday with four games starting at 1:30 p.m. with the D team. The C, B, and A teams play at 3:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m., and 7:30 p.m. respectively.
