Save-a-Lot coming back to Norwich
NORWICH – In early July, patrons of the South Plaza grocery store Save-a-lot were shocked to discover the business had suddenly closed its doors.
Now, almost three months later, the discount store is looking to re-open under new ownership.
Eric Bowers, the man who first brought Save-a-Lot to the Norwich landscape in 1998 and operated it successfully until 2003, has re-purchased the operation and will be opening it again in early November.
“We’re going to very aggressive. We want to win back the support of the customers,” he said Thursday.
Bowers said a final date has yet to be determined for the grand opening.
The store will be officially owned by Bowers’ company, Norwich Supermarkets Inc., but will keep its Save-A-Lot name and will occupy the same location.
Town of Norwich Supervisor David C. Law said he had received a number of calls regarding the store’s closure since July from local citizens wanting to know why the store closed and when or if it was coming back.
“It stirred more response from people than any recent issue I can remember,” recalled Law.
The supervisor said he and Commerce Chenango would help to organize and attend a ribbon cutting ceremony welcoming back the business.
“I have no doubt that when they open back up, a lot of my local constituents will be very relieved,” Law said.
