Oxford 1, Hancock 0
HANCOCK – Amanda Marks waited a long time for a second chance, and she made the most of that opportunity.
Marks cashed in on a penalty stroke with 5:45 in regulation, and Oxford posted the shutout win on Thursday to avenge an early-season defeat to the Wildcats.
“Amanda had a penalty stroke earlier this season, and she muffed that one,” said Oxford coach Missy Chrystie recalling Marks’ first stroke attempt. “I wanted to give her a chance at redemption, and this one was just a beautiful shot.”
Oxford created the penalty stroke in Hancock’s defensive circle when the Hancock goalie made a save and used her hands to do it. Field hockey regulations prohibit the use of one’s hands to make a save, Chrystie said. “We definitely had more chances in this game, and it was back and forth for both teams,” she said. “We’ve been a defensive-minded team this season, and it was nice to put some points on the board.”
Alyshia Crawford made nine saves for Oxford (3-10).

Erin Smith scored on a penalty stroke at 23:55, the first of her two goals in the opening half. The penalty stroke was awarded after a Vestal defender used her foot to stop a sure-fire goal.
“They packed it in and there wasn’t much room to work on offense,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin, “but we did play well.”
Emily Conroe tallied Greene’s only goal in the second half.

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville continues to make big strides forward forcing a tie with Canastota on Thursday. Earlier this season, the Raiders scored three times off penalty corners en route to a 7-0 win over S-E.

After Canastota scored six minutes into the game, S-E was able to regroup before halftime as Maggie Burlison knotted the game up with seven minutes left in the first period.
Although Canastota had the edge in the final shots and penalty corners statistics, S-E actually had the advantage during the 10-minute sudden-victory overtime. “I think we were fueled positively as the game went on, and they probably were frustrated,” Cooman said.
