4-H Achievement Day: Celebrating the best of Chenango 4-H

CHENANGO COUNTY – Chenango County 4-H will honor participants this weekend at its annual 4-H Achievement Day banquet. The event, which will be a dish to pass luncheon, will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the United Church of Christ in Norwich.
The event will give 4-H’ers, leaders, volunteers and parents a chance to get together to celebrate the achievements of the past 4-H year and look forward to the coming 2009-2010 4-H project year.
Members will be rewarded for their hard work in the different 4-H project areas, home economics, public speaking, community service, and animal science at Achievement Day. They will also be awarded Leadership Awards, Overall Achievement Awards, and Awards Trips.
Seniors (14-19 years) will be awarded the Otis A. Thompson and Frank E. Skinner Leadership Awards, as well as the Warren E. Eaton and J.C. Estelow Awards, achievement awards for outstanding Project Work and Overall Accomplishments throughout ones 4-H Career.
Junior 4-H members will receive achievement awards as well, based on the amount of their 4-H participation. The top members ages 9-12 receive a certificate and $100 scholarship to attend 4-H camp next summer. The Julie K. Blanchard Jr. Achievement Award, sponsored by the Chenango County 4-H Teen Council, is given to one 4-H Youth under the age of 13. This award recognizes the 4-H member who has most active in the 4-H program for the current year.
Clubs will also be recognized during the event by way of the Harry L. Case Top Club Award, given to the club who has been most active and achieved the most during the course of the year, and the Al and Thelma Evans Top County Fair Club Award, bestowed upon the club with the most in-depth participation at the Chenango County Fair. Given in memory of Albert and Thelma Evans, the top club receives a cash award and trophy, generously sponsored by the family.
The Top Promotional Club and the Charles and Palma Goodwin Community Service Club Awards will also be named. Furthering our mission of positive youth development and community interaction, these two awards recognize clubs that have gone above and beyond to promote 4-H as a positive youth experience and who have given back to their communities throughout the entire year.
Individual club members are recognized as well.  Members develop their leadership and civic responsibility skills by running and being elected club officers. Two positions that are recognized are the Club Secretaries and Club News Reporters who receive awards based upon submission of the most reports to the 4-H Office in a timely manner. The top three receive cash awards and certificates of achievement.
Achievement Day is also a celebration of the adults who give so much to enrich the lives of our youth, a chance to recognize and say “thank you” to those parents, leaders, and volunteers who commit themselves to early mornings, late evenings, weekends and a week at the county fair. All who are associated with Chenango County 4-H are eligible to nominate those people who they feel contribute the most to the program. Votes are tallied and recipients named for the following awards: 4-H Volunteer of the Year, 4-H Lifetime Volunteer, 4-H Alumni of the Year, and Friend of 4-H.
