Scotland’s North Sea Gas comes to Oxford’s 6 On The Square
OXFORD – For those of you who were longing for more of the award winning band “North Sea Gas” last year, this Saturday at 7:30 p.m., they’re returning to 6 On The Square (6OTS). If you’re new to North Sea Gas, they are one of Scotland’s most popular bands, and have been wowing audiences all over the world for twenty-nine years. They have performed live, appeared on television and on radio shows in America, China, Canada, Germany, Austria, Scotland and many other destinations. Still going strong, this highly entertaining Scottish folk band has a new album out and they’re coming to fill the room with their tremendous harmonies and “great craic.”
North Sea Gas is Dave Gilfillan, Ronnie MacDonald and Grant Simpson, all great Scots, performing music from the traditional to contemporary, with unique twists that are all their own. Their terrific vocals with three part harmonies and tales of Scotland are accompanied by a myriad of instruments: guitars, mandolin, fiddle, bouzouki, bodhran, whistles and banjo. With their rousing sing-along vocals and big heartfelt ballads, North Sea Gas adds to that a sense of on stage fun and tongue-in-cheek humor.
Over the years the band has recorded 14 albums and they are constantly adding new material to their show. Their new live album Edinburgh Toon was recorded in Edinburgh’s “Grassmarket.” With Gold and Silver disc awards from the Scottish Music Industry Association, they have an ever-growing fan base which ranges through all of the age groups thus giving the “gas” show a wonderful atmosphere. Just in case you’re wondering what “craic” is, it’s a Celtic cultural term for great fun and entertainment; come have some at 6OTS!
The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 until the date of the performance, $18 at the door. For further information, call 843-OTS6 (6876) or visit www.6onthesquare.org.
Don’t miss these upcoming musical performances by Marjorie Thompson (debuting music from her new album) – Oct. 30; Rod Picott & Amanda Shires – Nov. 7; and Woodshed Prophets – Nov. 27. All shows are at 7:30 p.m, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.
The next Open Mic night, the third Thursday of the month, is Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. and the next Drumming Circle, the last Tuesday of the month, is Oct. 27 at 7 p.m.
6OTS is located at 6 LaFayette Park in downtown Oxford.
