Norwich edges Greene in ‘great meet’

Girls’ Swimming

Norwich 94, Greene 89
GREENE – Greene won more of the battles, but it was Norwich that won the war.
In a non-league meet between local rivals, Norwich used a sweep in the 500-yard freestyle to grab a 13-point lead, and hang on for its third win of the season.
Greene (7-0, 8-2) won nine of 12 events including all three relays and the last four events. “What a great meet,” said Greene coach Mike Platta summing up what he had just witnessed. “We made a great run at them the last few events, but we could not match them depth-wise. Norwich has some good, young swimmers.”
Makenzie Williams, Kerstin Franklin, and Erin Gawronski had wins for Norwich, and it was Gawronski who led the one-two-three finish for the Tornado in the 500.
Jessica Brooks, Katie Crowe, Jessica Treadwell, Jenny Yeager, Leah Kazalski, Emily Bertram had multiple wins for Greene as individuals or as part of a victorious relay.
“We did have a lot of personal bests tonight,” Platta said. “Even though we were swimming back-to-back meets, we came out ready. It was senior night, and there was a lot of emotion on the deck and surrounding the meet. The focus was there. My hat is off to Norwich and Coach (Amanda) Downey. She is doing a fantastic job.”
Greene (7-0, 8-2) is at Sherburne-Earlville Friday.

Field Hockey

Greene 7, Afton 0
GREENE – Greene beat Afton for the third time this season, and each win over the Crimson Knights has been increasingly impressive.
“We started a little slow after halftime,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin, who said her players may have lost focus after the senior recognition ceremony. “Once we settled down, holy cow, we just rolled. I looked at the score and couldn’t believe we had seven goals. I was trying to pull the starters out of there.”
Seniors Anna Crumb (two goals), Amy David, and Erin Smith accounted for four tallies. Underclassmen Jahna Driscoll, Andrea Day, and Emily Clark rounded out the scoring.
The Trojans host their own field hockey tournament this weekend, and face Maine-Endwell Friday at 8 p.m.

OTSELIC – Otselic Valley trimmed Cincinnatus’ goal output, but was unable to solve the Red Lions in a shutout defeat Wednesday.
Jake Stone scored eight minutes into the contest for Cincy, and had both of his team’s first-half tallies.
“We played them a little better, but were were not getting many scoring chances,” said OV coach Dave Loomis, whose team dropped a 5-0 final to Cincy earlier this season. “They are a well-skilled team that is good at controlling the ball and setting up quality shots. Our defense did a decent job, and Brandon Coye made some nice saves for us.”

Girls’ Soccer

Oxford 3, Delhi 2
DELHI – Oxford was able to avenge a loss to Delhi from earlier this season building a 3-0 lead over the game’s first 45 minutes.
In the two clubs’ first matchup, the game was halted with 23 minutes remaining due to thunder and lightning. This time around, the thunder and lightning came from the Blackhawks’ offense.
“We did a really good job moving the ball, and defensively we were marking up much better,” said Oxford coach Kathleen Cragle.
Jackie Heggie had a goal in the first half, and Kelli Whitehill along with Haley Witchella had goals in the first five minutes of the second half to build a commanding lead.
Delhi raised its level of play, and was within one goal after a penalty kick in the final 10 minutes. “They were pressuring pretty well, but there was nothing too solid after the second goal,” Cragle said.
Oxford (5-8-1) plays at B-G on Saturday.
