Corrections employee arrested for DWI and fighting with police

NORWICH – Norwich City Police arrested a lieutenant working for the state Department of Correctional Services at Camp Georgetown Saturday, charging him with driving while intoxicated and striking arresting officers.

Johnny Gonzalez, 52, of 309 Chenango Lake Road, Norwich, was charged with DWI and two counts of second degree harassment.

Officers pulled over Gonzalez at around 1:20 a.m. Saturday morning for failure to keep right. A passing patrol noticed the defendant’s vehicle weaving out of the lane and crossing the center divide line on North Broad Street, according to reports.

After being pulled over, Gonzalez was observed to have the smell of alcohol and slurred speech, police said. Gonzalez cooperated with field sobriety tests and was determined to be intoxicated, police said. Officers said Gonzalez refused to take a breath test at the scene and he was placed under arrest before being taken to the Norwich Police Station for processing. While at the station, police said Gonzalez became belligerent and confrontational.
