Smyrna woman flown to hospital after being hit by car

SMYRNA – Monday afternoon, a Smyrna woman was flown to Syracuse for medical treatment after she was struck by a passing car.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an accident that occurred Monday at around 1:15 p.m. when 60-year-old Cheryl Fleming was struck by a four-door Mercury Sable sedan as she retrieved her mail.

The accident took place along state Route 80 near the intersection of Davis Road, in front of Fleming’s home.

The operator of the sedan, 25-year-old South Otselic resident James Congdon-Mydore, was traveling east on the 55-mile-an-hour posted route when he suddenly came upon Fleming in the middle of the road, reported Sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Richard Cobb.

“At this time we’re not sure what exactly happened. The incident is still under investigation. No tickets have been issued and it appears the pedestrian may have stepped in front of the oncoming vehicle; she may not have seen the car,” said Cobb.
