Greene ends Delhi’s two-year reign atop the MAC
GREENE – It was only a matter of time before Greene’s offense began to click.
Leading Walton by just a goal at halftime thanks to the stellar defense of Warriors keeper Brooke Spencer, the Trojans’ prolific offense used relentless pressure and pinpoint passing to tally three more times and win the first MAC championship game, 4-0 at George Raymond Field Thursday evening.
“We talked at halftime about making adjustments as far as the passing game went,” said Greene head coach Sue Carlin. “The kids recognized that, and once we got the combinations going… .”
Spencer warded off 12 first-half shots, and the only one that got by her was a strong drive following a rebound by Trojans junior Andrea Day at the 13:38 mark.
Walton did not make its initial foray into the Greene penalty circle until 12 1/2 minutes remained in the opening half, and that first trip lasted no more than three seconds. The Warriors, who had two losses coming into the game, finished with just three shots, and became the 13th team this season to suffer a shutout loss to Greene (16-0)
“Offensively, their skills and passing are phenomenal,” said Walton coach Bryn Hoover-Daye. “Our defense stayed as tough as it could. The goals they had in this game were definitely well earned.”
Greene narrowly missed its second goal just 45 seconds into the second half when a close-range shot was sent wide of the cage. At 20:01, Erin Smith upped the advantage to two. Andrea Day made an initial surge into the penalty circle, and her shot was kicked out of the penalty circle by Spencer. Day retrieved the ball, passed to Amy David, who centered the ball to Smith. Smith one-timed a reverse-sticked shot in no-look fashion.
Chrissy Conroe’s goal to raise the lead to three was nearly as pretty as Smith’s. After taking a penalty corner entry pass from Jahna Driscoll, Conroe juked a Walton player, and flipped a shot into the right corner. Driscoll added a goal with just over six minutes left following a rebound.
“We needed a challenge, and I don’t think we took them lightly,” Carlin said. “I don’t think we were as sharp as we needed to be in the first half. It was a good lesson learned, and we need to be ready from the start.”
In compiling a perfect record this season, Greene has now outscored its opponents 76-4. The Trojans will play Vestal in two weeks for the Section IV, Class A title.
