Boil-water order causes Guilford school closure

GUILFORD – Guilford Elementary School students had an unexpected day off today, due to a boil-water order in the hamlet of Guilford where the school is located.
According to Guilford Town Clerk Gail Hoffman, the town was notified at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Sunday that some hamlet residents were without water and others were experiencing low water pressure.
While service was restored later that day, when the valve determined to be the root of the problem was repaired by Water Superintendent Jeff Fuller, a boil-water order must remain in effect until testing is completed, the town clerk reported.
“Water should be brought to a full, rolling boil for two minutes for any food preparation or consumption,” Hoffman said.
The town clerk also reported that she had spoken with the Chenango County Department of Public Health, at which time she was informed by public health officials that the order will likely be lifted by Wednesday at the latest.
As a result of the boil-water order, the Bainbridge-Guilford Central School District canceled classes at the Guilford Elementary School on Monday.
Any residents who have concerns regarding their water, should contact either the town offices at 895-9966 or Chenango County Environmental Health at 337-1673.
