Greene hangs on for victory; Oxford defeats Saints in overtime

Greene 15, Susquehanna Valley 14
GREENE – Susquehanna Valley nearly pulled off its second big upset in as many weeks.
The Trojans (6-2) stopped a two-point conversion with 1:27 remaining on the clock to preserve a one-point lead and hold on for a tight victory Friday at George Raymond Field.
Greene turned the ball over five times in the game, twice in the fourth quarter inside its own 25. SV was stopped on a fourth-and-goal from the two the first time, but cashed in on an 11-yard scoring run from Laurent Dure to close the gap to one point.
Greene seniors Tyler Beckwith and Nic Puglisi penetrated quickly to stuff Dure on the two-point try. “We knew from week one to now, Susquehanna Valley has improved a ton,” said Greene head coach Tim Paske. The Sabers lost their first six games, but upset previously-unbeaten Newark Valley last week. “We gave them hope, and they stayed in the game. They kept fighting, and that’s a credit to their staff and players.”
Greene broke an 8-8 halftime tie executing a 12-play, 63-yard drive late in the third quarter. On a fourth-and-nine from the SV 15, Dan Jenks took a quick handoff, and squirted through the left side for the go-ahead touchdown. It was a similar situation to the Trojans’ initital score when Kurt Shear scored on a fourth-and-goal from the seven – on a run play.
“We had run the ball to get down there (near the endzone), and they were defending a certain way with our trips formation,” Paske said. “The kids came through. The O-line made the blocks and Jenks ran hard.”
Sus Valley capitalized on Greene’s first turnover of the game recovering a fumble deep in the Trojans’ territory. Dure scored on an eight-yard run, and added the two-point run.
Shear finished off a long drive and added the two-point run to knot the game in the second quarter. Shear, getting his most extensive work of the season, finished with a game-high 97 yards on 21 carries.

Oxford 13, Seton Catholic Central 7 (OT)
OXFORD – Oxford gave up 78 yards on the Saints’ first possession, then stopped the visitors cold the rest of the way.
The Blackhawks halted a two-game losing streak and kept their aspirations of a winning season alive with an overtime victory on Friday night.
Paul Wonka’s three-yard TD run on Oxford’s first overtime possession proved the margin of victory. “After that first drive, our defense was solid,” said Oxford coach Mike Chrystie. “It was just a matter of getting the ball into the endzone.”
The Saints’ offense executed its opening drive to perfection, and Jesse Wood’s 28-yard score put SCC up 7-0. After that, Seton turned it over eight times – six in second half alone.
Paul Wonka dove into the endzone carrying a would-be Seton tackler the final two yards on a 10-yard score in the second quarter to tie the game.
Oxford had two field goal attempts in the fourth quarter to win the game. A bad snap foiled the first attempt, and the second went wide right to force extra minutes.
“I think it’s a major improvement for our team to go 2-7 last year to possibly 5-4 if we win next week,” Chrystie said. “This group was disappointed that it did not make the playoffs, and that’s a good thing. It shows that they were not satisfied with our performance this season.”
Wonka led the Blackhawks with 113 yards rushing on 27 carries, his third 100-yard rushing day of the season.
The Blackhawks host Moravia on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Chenango Forks 36, UV-Edmeston 0
NEW BERLIN – Chenango Forks did all of its scoring in the first half, and improved to 8-0 on the season in its final regular season game before the playoffs.
Tyler Lusht had two TD runs in the first half for the Blue Devils, who did not attempt a pass in the game.
“It was like two different ballgames,” said UV-E coach Jack Loeffler. “We made some adjustments, and something lit a fire under our players in the second. “We know we were probably facing their second team, but the backups on the number two ranked team in the state are as good or better than many teams. They didn’t get a first down in the second half.
“It was the first time (the second half) that we played our typical kind of football. We drove down to their one-yard line, and our incentive was to score. Unfortunately, a penalty moved us back 10 yards, and we fell short.”

Delhi 7, Bainbridge-Guilford 0
DELHI – B-G’s defense did a little bit of bending, but broke just once in a battle for the Class D, Division VII title.
Delhi’s lone score came in the second quarter on a fourth-down pass. Anthony Salerno’s pass was deflected in the endzone by the Bobcats’ Justin Pepper, and Zach Newkerk was able to haul in the 10-yard score. The successful point-after boot ended the day’s scoring on a miserable, rainy day.
“The field was in terrible shape, and I think, for us – because we do a lot of pulling and trapping – (the conditions) made it difficult to put together any consistent offense,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “Their size up front and their two inside linebackers just handled us at the line of scrimmage.”
The Bobcats were fighting an uphill battle in terms of field position throughout the game. Other than a failed onside kick by Delhi to start the game – one that gave B-G possession at the 45 – the visiting club did not progress past midfield at any other point in the first half, and was typically setting up shop inside its own 20 after pinpoint Delhi punting.
“Field position was tough, but our defense definitely gave us a chance to stay in the game,” Mattingly said.
Delhi finished with 153 yards of total rushing, 141 of those coming from stout fullback Jack Fletcher. Defenders Pepper, Jordan Boudreau, and Ethan Mazzarella had outstanding games, Mattingly said.
Meanwhile, B-G had 47 yards of total offense and finished with just two first downs. Five dropped passes didn’t help the B-G effort either.
The Bobcats meet Section IV, Division VIII champion Groton on Saturday at Binghamton Alumni Stadium.
