Grid seasons for Oxford, S-E end tonight
The 2009 football season ends tonight for two teams as Oxford will entertain Moravia in a Class D crossover, while Sherburne-Earlville marches north to face Morrisville-Eaton. Tomorrow, we feature the remaining three games on the local slate, and examine area coaches’ opinions on senior leadership.
Unadilla Valley-Edmeston, according to athletics coordinator Matt Osborne, was unable to find an opponent in week nine, and wraps up its season with an 0-8 record. Below are summaries of tonight’s games:
Moravia (5-3) at Oxford (4-4), 7 p.m.
Among the 15 Section IV, Class D teams, Moravia invades Blackhawks territory with the third rated scoring defense among the D schools giving up just 12.8 points a game, while on offense, the Blue Devils’ varied attack scores at a rate of 23.6 points per game.
“They finished in the same spot in division play as us, and they’re probably thinking the same as us: A player here or there, and they’re in the playoffs,” said Oxford coach Mike Chrystie. “They have some decent skill guys and they’ve fought some injuries. I think they’re finally back at almost 100 percent.”
Moravia has mixed the run and pass over the years. At times it will utilize a spread formation, and other times it will line up in the “I formation” and run right at defenses. “I’m sure they will want to establish the run, but they won’t be shy about spreading us out if they need to,” Chrystie said.
Oxford, since allowing 80 points the first two games, had tightened up its defense allowing just over nine points per game in winning four of six games. Running backs Paul Wonka (426 yards) and Booker Davis (391 yards) lead the running game, quarterback John Wonka leads area passers with 794 yards, and senior receiver Jeremy Nelson is second among all Chenango County receivers with 15 catches for 465 yards.
Sherburne-Earlville (2-6) at Morrisville-Eaton (4-4), 6:30 p.m.
Morrisville-Eaton, a Section III Class D playoff team, is coming off back-to-back losses dropping a five-touchdown shutout loss to Dolgeville two weeks ago, and a 28-6 loss to Lafayette last week.
In the defeat to Lafayette, leading rusher Joey Vandee suffered an ankle injury early in the game. He didn’t return to the contest, and his participation in tonight’s game is questionable.
“We just want to end the season on a high note, especially for our seniors,” said S-E coach Mike Jasper.
The Marauders are coming off their best statistical game on offense, but conversely, their worst game on defense as Frankfort-Schuyler scored 42 points and racked up 494 total yards.
“Every week we do some things well, but we continue to make mistakes or penalties at critical times,” Jasper said.
While VanDee’s presence is up in the air, starting quarterback Ben Thomas is an offensive threat Jasper’s team needs to contain.
