Greene soccer, field hockey teams play for section titles
It took a long time for Greene’s soccer team to earn the respect of state pollsters, and now that the Trojans are ranked among the top ten – at number eight – they want to prove they belong.
Greene (17-1) will meet up with the state’s number three-ranked Class C team, Marathon, Saturday at 11:15 a.m. at the Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta for its first boys’ soccer sectional title. It’s the third appearance in the sectional finals for Greene, but the first in over 15 years.
“One of the motivational factors for us is lack of respect,” said Greene’s third-year head coach, Rick Tallman. Tallman said his team went undefeated a large portion of this season, and the team’s only defeat was a 4-2 decision to S.S. Seward, the number one ranked Class C team in the state when the game was played. “The MAC (Midstate Athletic Conference) may not be a strong league (from top to bottom), and we’ve had to go out and earn respect. I think we proved how good we are this season by reaching the finals.”
In Marathon, the Trojans meet a team that has a long tradition of winning, and Tallman is well aware of the Olympians’ accomplishments. He lives in Marathon, and knows the head coach and many of this year’s players.
“We know they’re a very aggressive team, and Chip Stewart (Marathon coach) gets the best out of his players,” Tallman said. “They play some long ball, and aren’t as good with the small ball. That’s where we can have the advantage. I know they will bring another level of physicality, and we have to step that up a notch.”

In posting 13 shutout wins in a 16-win unbeaten season, the Trojans are prohibitive favorites tonight in the Section IV Class A finals against Vestal.
Greene posted a pair of 3-0 shutout wins over the Golden Bears this season, and have outscored opponents 76-4, a remarkable statement of dominance. Among those shutouts, eight have been by four goals or more – perhaps the equivalent of four touchdowns in the football game.
Erin Smith leads four Trojans in double figures goals this season with 14. Anna Crumb and Andrea Day have 12 apiece, and freshman Jahna Driscoll has 11 tallies. Senior Christine Conroe is just off the 10-goal mark with nine this season.
In the most recent meetings with Vestal, the Greene has had to deal with the Golden Bears packing in their defense, said head coach Sue Carlin. “Their goalie is very good,” Carlin said. “If they (pack it in), we’ll need to execute well.”
