United Way campaign at 56 percent of goal
CHENANGO COUNTY – The Chenango United Way has surpassed the half way point both in the timeline for their annual fundraising campaign and in their progress toward this year’s financial goal.
On Friday, roughly seven weeks after the United Way kicked off the 2010 campaign with the annual “Day of Caring” event, CUW Executive Director Elizabeth Monaco reported that the organization, which raises and distributes money to local non-profit agencies and organizations, has reached 56 percent, or just over $262,000, of the $465,000 goal.
With 6 1/2 weeks remaining before their Dec. 31 cutoff, Campaign Director Bryne Lewis Allport admits that the money is coming in more slowly this year than they anticipated.
“Typically at this point in November we’re at 65 to 70 percent (of goal),” she explained.
The organization kept its fundraising goal flat this year, according to the campaign director, because they recognize that everyone is feeling the financial strain. At the same time, however, “the needs of the community are so great, we felt we couldn’t take a step back,” she said.
“Everyone is hurting,” Allport said. And with more people hovering on the “threshold,” of needed to access the care network that United Way funding supports, the success of this year’s campaign is even more important.
The increased level of need is reflected in the number of allocation requests they have received from local agencies. Last year, CUW received a total of 22 requests totaling $695,000. This year, 25 organizations filed requests seeking a total of $765,000 in funding.
“Our community has such a great history of taking care of its own,” she said, and it is this “great civic spirit” that she is counting on to help the Chenango United Way meet its financial goal this year.
Despite the hardships many in the community are facing, Allport cited several companies which have managed to exceed their individual employee contribution goals already, including NBT, Golden Artist Colors and Visions Federal Credit Union.
Other companies, however, have expressed concerns that they may not be able to meet their goal this year, she said. But Allport still finds something she considers positive in those reports.
Even though individuals may not be donating as much, “the participation is holding strong,” she said, which she sees as a sign that even if their own financial situation is more tenuous than it was last year, they remain committed to supporting United Way any way they can.
According to Allport, CUW will continue to collect donations toward their $465,000 goal until Dec. 31. But don’t wait until the last minute if you want a chance to win either a $500 gift card or a home theater system, she cautioned. Only those who donate prior to Dec. 1, and are either new contributors donating at least $1 a week or existing donors increasing their donation by at least that amount, are eligible for the drawing, which is sponosed by Norwich Pharmaceuticals and Preferred Mutual Insurance.
