County fulfills obligation to museum project
NORWICH – Chenango County has fulfilled its four-year, $100,000 promise of financial support of the building and renovation project underway at the Chenango County Historical Society and Museum on Rexford Street.
Board of Supervisors Chairman Richard B. Decker last week presented the Society’s final request to members of the Planning & Economic Development Committee for payment.
The full board had already released $50,000 since 2007. The funding was appropriated from the county’s portion of Tobacco Settlement Funds.
Earlier this month, members of the Finance Committee suggested scaling back the amount commited in order to reflect changes in the Society’s plans and referred the matter to Planning. The formerly $3 million project was scaled back to $320,000 to reflect the downturn in the economy and increased building costs, its director reported back in June.
Decker said the county’s promise was earmarked specifically for the historian’s office and research room. Both were formerly located in the museum’s small basement. The building next door, at 43 Rexford, is currently being gutted and renovated to accommodate them.
“The money was always intended for the county’s historian, and that’s what they are working on now,” Decker said.
During discussion of the referral, Town of Plymouth Supervisor Jerry Kreiner said the suggestion to scale back was “another example of this committee moving on something and having it referred back and holding things up.”
Committee Chairmwoman Linda E. Natoli said her committee wouldn’t act on Finance’s request to scale back. “Tell them we can’t help them,” she said.
