City Police charge two after executing search warrant in cocaine investigation

NORWICH – The Norwich Police Department arrested two city residents on drug charges Thursday night after executing a search warrant at a Fair Street apartment.
Christopher S. Purdy, 40, 28 Fair St. Apt. 201, Norwich, was charged with first degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
District Attorney Joseph A. McBride said the charge is a Class A-1 felony, the highest in New York State, and carries with it a possible life sentence if Purdy is convicted.
Police say they discovered more than half a pound of cocaine and two ounces of marijuana in Purdy’s vehicle parked on Cortland Street following his arrest.
Norwich Police Chief Joseph Angelino said the seized cocaine alone had a street value in excess of $25,000.
Purdy was also charged with fourth degree criminal possession of marijuana and second degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors.
He appeared in Norwich City Court Friday morning and was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility after Judge James Downey said only a higher court had the jurisdiction to assign bail in the case, citing the severity of the offense.
Purdy’s girlfriend, Michelle L. Puharich, 39, also of 28 Fair St. Apt 201, was charged with fourth degree criminal facilitation and second degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanors, and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.
These arrests conclude an investigation of the distribution of cocaine in the Norwich area, according to a press release from the city. The Norwich Police were supported in this investigation by the New York State Police Community Narcotics Team, Chenango County Sheriff’s Office and the Greene Police Department.
“We located a substantial amount of cocaine and crack cocaine double-wrapped in plastic along with packaged marijuana,” said Norwich Police Officer Michael Purdy.
The search warrant was endorsed for the residence, persons in the residence and vehicles owned by those present.
“This was the first investigation in which police K9 Weeks and handler Officer Clarke played a major role in locating hidden illegal substances,” said Angelino.
Christopher Purdy is not related to Officer Michael Purdy, the press release noted.
