NORWICH – Are you positive you’re negative? Planned Parenthood of South Central New York, Inc. will mark World AIDS Day by offering free anonymous rapid HIV testing and counseling on Tuesday, December 1st from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its clinics at
• The Eaton Center, 26 Conkey Avenue, Suite 208 in Norwich
• 37 Pleasant Street in Sidney
• 37 Dietz Street in Oneonta
• 130 North Street in Walton
• 117 Hawley Street in Binghamton
The rapid HIV test is a painless finger prick for a drop of blood. Results are ready in 20 minutes.
Patients will also receive free counseling on how to identify and reduce their risk of HIV infection. Planned Parenthood’s trained educators will be on hand to answer questions.
Debra Marcus, Chief Executive Officer at Planned Parenthood, said as many as one in three people with HIV don’t know they are infected. “Learning your HIV status is critical to protecting your own health as well as that of others. When people know they’re infected, they can get health care and medications to keep themselves healthy for years. In addition, they can prevent further spread of the disease,” Marcus said.
According to the New York State Department of Health, 55 people in Chenango County have either HIV or AIDS.
