Common Council recognizes Elks Lodge for community contributions

NORWICH – The City of Norwich recognized the community contributions of the Norwich Elks Lodge at a Common Council meeting Nov. 17.
Norwich Mayor Joseph Maiurano presented a Certificate of Recognition to Elks Lodge Exalted Ruler Jeff Cola on behalf of the council and the city.
“With all the activities they’ve sponsored in the past year like the cruise-ins, they earned money to donate to Toys For Tots and gave donations to the Norwich Fire Department and the Norwich Police Department. They also donate or participate in a number of other community activities in the area. We want to acknowledge and appreciate that support. They’ve been working hard and hopefully they will continue to be an organization who helps out the community,” said Maiurano.
Cola said he was grateful for the recognition and said the #1222 Lodge based in Norwich had faced a number of its own challenges in recent years, including financial ones, and that he was pleased the organization was rebuilding itself in the community.
“We started this year after the Elks Club fell out of the community for the past few years and had some financial issues. We’ve been in a phase of successful rebuilding and now we are looking again to refocus our efforts on the local community,” he said.
The Norwich lodge has about 280 members in the private organization.
“You basically fill out an application and there’s a review process, but we’re always looking for new members,” said Cola. “What we’re here for is the community. We’re also a good place to come hang out, have a quiet drink and a meal, but also you can do some good for your own community. It’s a great thing.”
This summer, the Elks sponsored the weekly Saturday evening East Park cruise-ins in downtown Norwich. The money the club raised from the events was later donated to a number of community organizations.
“We hoped the event would draw some extra traffic and business to the downtown area,” said Cola.
The club also holds a number of chicken barbecues, raffles and youth oriented benefits, including an annual scholarship which is awarded to a Norwich senior.
