Tree auction to raise money for Greene Historical Society
GREENE – The Greene Historical Society is holding a silent Christmas tree auction which they hope will help encourage shoppers to shop locally this holiday season as well as raise money for their organization.
The auction, which will run through Friday, Dec. 11, is intended to help elongate the village’s Hometown Holiday Weekend, which takes place this weekend, explained Sharon Davis, vice president of the historical society.
“By sponsoring trees in the businesses, we are hoping to spread out the holiday trend to more than just a weekend celebration,” she said. “Placing the trees in businesses will promote local shopping as well.”
According to Davis, each of the pre-lit tree 3 or 4-foot trees has been sponsored by a local business or organization and are uniquely decorated in a variety of themes.
Take the Najarian Chiropractic tree, located at Edward Jones, with its bone and skeleton decorations. Or the patriotic tree, on display at Sidney Federal Credit Union. One of Davis’ favorites, she said, is the library schoolhouse tree sponsored by the Moore Memorial Library, complete with miniature chalkboards and school supplies. The Village Variety’s I Spy tree, topped appropriately with a magnifying glass, is a favorite of the society’s president, Nancy Bromley; as is the “roses in blue” themed tree in the window of Dress Your Fancy.
Bromley commended her second in command and society member Jody Diaz for their work in decorating the trees so creatively. Davis, however, was quick to credit the contributions of the rest of the society as well.
“We all pulled this together,” she said, explaining that while the businesses themselves donated money to cover the cost of purchasing the pre-lit artificial trees, it was the society’s members who provided the decorations and ornaments used to trim the trees.
The decorated trees are located at: Village Variety, Dress Your Fancy, Sidney Federal Credit Union, Village of Greene office, the Village Bakery & Cafe, Focus Salon, Comforts True Value, Xtra Mart, Ivy House Florist, Thomas Real Estate, McKinney Real Estate and Radio Shack.
In addition, multiple trees are on display at Edward Jones, Gray & Sons Insurance and the Moore Memorial Library. According to Davis, the trees at these three locations include those which have been sponsored by businesses and organizations which don’t have their own storefronts.
These other sponsors are The Raymond Foundation, the Greater Greene Chamber of Commerce, Larkin’s Law Office, Najarian Chiropractic, the L.A. Najarian Ribbon Mill, Fabric Barn, Greene Rotary, Greene Garden Club, the Bell Ringers, and, of course, the Greene Historical Society.
Those wishing to bid on a particular tree or trees, may do so by placing a bid in the box provided at each location. Minimum bids for each of the trees have been set, and are included on the display. Bidding will end on Fri., Dec. 11.
“We will contact the highest bidder of each tree by December 15,” reported Davis, after which they can make arrangements to pay for and pick up the trees.
