GREENE – Chenango Forks used a late first-quarter/early second quarter surge to turn a three-point deficit into a seven-point lead, and the Blue Devils maintained their advantage to win the Greene Tip-Off Tournament title on Saturday.
Two baskets at the end of the first quarter gave the Blue Devils a 12-11 lead. Over the first three minutes of the second quarter, Corey Bruet, Casey Redfern, and Dan Molter hit three balls as the lead grew to 23-16.
“They were getting good looks at the basket and knocking shots down,” said Greene coach Jeff Paske. “We got away from our game plan (to get the ball inside), and weren’t hitting outside shots. We did a better job of that in the second half, but didn’t get enough defensive stops.”

McDermott had his best varsity game in Friday’s opening-round game. The senior forward finished with 20 points and 14 boards in a 16-point win over Harpursville.
The Trojans extended a six-point lead at the half to 18 shutting out the Hornets, 12-0, in the third quarter. “That’s the first time (shutting out a team in a quarter) that is happened in my 10 years,” Paske said. “We mixed up our defenses in the third quarter, and it threw them for a loop.”

S-E Tipoff Tournament
Unatego 65, Sherburne-Earlville 42
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville ran into a hot-shooting Unatego team in the finals of its own tournament, and dropped its first game of the season out of three contests Saturday night.
Cody Komenda had eight points in the second quarter for the Spartans, two of those three-pointers, as Unatego built a five-point first-quarter lead to 40-21 at halftime.
“Unatego is a small team, but they can really shoot,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard. “They took the ball to the basket really well, and we didn’t play good help defense.”
Komenda led the winners with 17 points, and tournament MVP, Will May, added 14.
S-E’s Sean Boise, an all-tournament pick, scored 13 for his club.
Friday, S-E advanced to the finals beating AA school Baldwinsville, 60-56. Branden McDaniel had eight in the fourth quarter and Boise seven. Leading 56-53 late, Doug Parks made two free throws in the final 30 seconds to seal the victory. McDaniel, an all-tourney selection, led with 17 points, while Boise chipped in with 14.
“This tournament was a great learning experience for our team,” Vibbard said. “We learned that we can play with and beat anybody, but at the same time, it showed that we could lose to anybody if we don’t play well.”
In the tournament’s other games, UV fell to Unatego on Friday, 87-28, and was beaten by Baldwinsville in the consolation game, 74-36.
Baldwinsville outscored UV in the second quarter 25-5 after leading by just two points at the first turn. “We played good defense in the first quarter and were able to put the ball in the basket,” said UV coach Matt Osborne. “We weren’t able to hold it together in the second quarter. We started to turn the ball over too much, and they really didn’t do anything different.”
Justin Hofer had 26 points for UV, who host Harpursville Tuesday.
