Norwich plans Winter Concert Wednesday

NORWICH – On Wednesday evening, the students of the Norwich High School music department will perform their annual winter concert. The concert will be held in the school’s auditorium beginning at 7 p.m. The concert will feature the school’s String Ensemble, Bands and Choirs.
Under the direction of Mark D. Sands, the String Ensemble will perform three selections, “Concerto for Strings” by Telemann, “Hopak” by Mousorgsky and Gabriel’s “Oboe” from the motion picture “The Mission” featuring Oboe soloist, Susan Marson.
Under the direction of Mary E. Mayo, the Treble Choir will perform two selections, “Dormi, Dormi,” an Italian Carol arranged by Mary Goetze and “And This Shall be Music” by Robert Louis Stevenson and Mary Lynn Lightfoot. Also under the direction of Mayo, the Madrigal Singers will perform “Carol of the Bells” and the Mixed Choir will perform “Ding-a Ding-a Ding” by Greg Gilpin and “I Dream a World” by Langston Hughes and Andre J. Thomas.
The Concert Band under director Lansing R. Dimon will perform “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies,” arranged by James Christensen. Also under Dimon’s direction the Symphonic Band will perform Selections from “Russian Christmas Music” arranged by Paul Cullen. The two bands will then combine to perform music from “The Nightmare Before Christmas” arranged by Dimon.
The evening’s festivities will conclude with “A Holiday Triptych,” also arranged by Dimon, which will be performed by the entire music department.
Department Coordinator Sands said admission is free and that the entire community is invited to attend. In the event of inclement weather, the snow date is Tuesday, Dec. 22 at 7 p.m.
