Morrisville book drive gets an unexpected windfall

NORWICH – The Early Childhood Organization (ECO), comprised of students from Morrisville State College’s Norwich Campus, got more than expected while organizing this year’s holiday book drive – much more.
An unanticipated donation has provided the 20 students, who are also members of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, with nearly $20,000 worth of new and slightly-used books.
“It’s great,” said Rebecca Potter. “We never thought we’d get this many.”
Potter, along with Angel Whaley, Kelly Graves and Samantha Hadlock, provide unofficial leadership for the organization, according to Margaret Hoose. Hoose is the assistant professor for Early Childhood, the first Morrisville State College degree offered exclusively at the Norwich campus.
Members of the ECO prepared for the book drive by placing posters and boxes throughout the county, which were collected weekly, and were pleased with the early results. In the first month, they had amassed an estimated 400 books. A single phone call on Dec. 2 changed all that.
Fran Van Slyke, a retired book dealer who resides in Bouckville, learned of the book drive when his wife saw a collection box at Kinney Drugs in Hamilton, and contacted the ECO with some extraordinary news.
“He called and asked if we would like a barnful of books,” laughed Whaley. “He said he wanted to make a large donation, but we certainly didn’t expect $20,000 worth.”
Van Slyke, who’d been storing the books for nearly two years, was anxious to clear out his barn, and considered the donation “a good way to give something back to the community.”
Since receiving the generous donation, ECO members have spent their time organizing the books into specific age groups, ranging from infancy to adulthood.
“We’re hoping that a successful first run will help to make this an annual event,” said Hoose. “We’re urging families to come down to the college and pick out a few books.”
In addition to its Gently Used Book Giveaway, taking place from 3 to 7 p.m. Dec. 18 at the Norwich Campus, ECO plans to make a large donation to the local Toys For Tots campaign.
