Dear Maggie,
My kids have reached the age where they’re beginning to question their belief in Santa Claus. Other kids in school have strong opinions and many of them are skeptical at best. What can I tell my own kids about what those other kids are saying? How can I help them get through the holidays with their innocent belief in magic intact?

Dear Old Fashioned,
If you haven’t got a copy of “Yes, Virginia,” yet, go get one (The Evening Sun always reprints it in the Christmas Eve edition). It’s hard to add much to what Mr. Church wrote in that famous editorial from the New York Sun. But I can add a little. I still believe in Santa Claus, in a very real, very serious way. Everything that exists in our world, began as a thought. A thought that someone thought on long enough, hard enough, that it became a belief. A belief that someone carried with them firmly enough, faithfully enough, that it became a reality. Every building started that way. Every business, every village and town, every seed that grew into a tree, everything began as a thought. The more people who give energy to a thought, the more real it becomes. So with all the people in all the world who believe in Santa Claus, with all the movies and books about him, all the stories and legends, all the images and toys and TV shows, all the art, all the Christmas cards featuring his rosy cheeks, how can he not be real?
