S-E beats Waterville behind Irwin’s career high

S-E 57, Waterville 46
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville went to junior forward Bridget Irwin time and again in the fourth quarter, and Waterville was unable to stop her.
Irwin scored 15 of her career-high 26 points over the final eight minutes, and S-E (4-1) pulled away for the Center State Conference win.
“They were playing us man-to-man, and we kept feeding Bridget the ball,” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan. “She was getting good inside position and made some nice cuts to the basket. She can use either hand around the basket, and is hard to stop.”
S-E also contained Waterville’s outside shooting threats, and controlled the defensive glass in the final quarter.
Irwin added 10 rebounds, her fourth straight double-double, and four steals. Kristi Vibbard scored 10 points, and Caitlynn Adams blocked three shots.
S-E plays Cooperstown on Saturday.

Greene 37, Unadilla Valley 16
NEW BERLIN – Greene’s balanced lineup from top to bottom proved too much for Unadilla Valley in Thursday’s dual meet matchup.
UV had four total victories on the day, none of them coming by pinfall. “There were some close matches tonight, and the 160-pound match (Keegan Cerwinski’s pin of UV’s Zach Montgomery) was closer than the fall would indicate. Greene is a deep team, and we’re still pretty young in a lot of spots.”
Greene’s defending sectional and state champions, Nick Wilcox (135) and Tyler Beckwith (189) remained unbeaten on the season.
UV competes at the Walton Tournament on Saturday.

GREENE – Greene won the battle of MAC unbeatens, and extended its intra-league winning streak to 45 dual meets beating the Makos on Thursday night.
George Flanagan and Alex Trass were four-time winners for the Trojans (3-0, 3-1), who won seven of the 11 events including a sweep of the three relays.
“(A-BG/H/S) won the league relays, so we knew we would be in for a tough evening,” said Greene coach Mike Platta. “Kevin Diefenbacher (Makos coach) has done a terrific job building their program, and we needed to put our number one lineup together to do well tonight.”
Kurt Rogler had a pair of individual-event wins for A/B-G/H/S.
