Monday morning fire destroys Rt. 12 structure

NORTH NORWICH – Firefighters responded to a structure fire Monday morning along State Highway 12 that engulfed a farmer’s machine shed.
At about 5:30 a.m., the North Norwich Fire Department with mutual aid from the Sherburne, Norwich and Smyrna Fire Departments, responded to a fire at 7654 on St. Hwy 12.
The North Norwich Fire Department was unavailable for comment Monday morning because their crews were responding to a fatal car accident which happened later along Rt. 12.
Sherburne Fire Chief Patrick Lawrence said fire crews remained at the farm scene of the fire for about two hours.
A passing motorist said he stopped at the scene to alert the family.
“I was able to see it from about a mile away, and when I got on the scene, I would estimate half of the roof was in flames. I ran to the house to wake up the family and they proceeded to call 911,” said Scott Sheldon, who was a firefighter in the Air Force for six years.
“I ran up and started knocking, a dog started barking and their son answered. I said, ‘I’m not sure if it’s your property, but your shed is on fire’ and it was covering about half the roof when we looked over.”
Lawrence said the fire destroyed the 30 feet by 40 feet shed and that the cause of the fire was believed to be a block heater on one of the tractors.
No one was injured in the fire, but the storage shed and a number of machine parts and a tractor were lost.
