GREENE – Greene reached the finals of its own Holiday Showcase dealing Unatego its second loss of the season on Tuesday night.
Scott Gorton’s three-pointer early in the fourth quarter gave Greene the lead for good, 45-44. Unatego was within 54-53 in the last 90 seconds when a Gorton layup, a Greene defensive stop, and a Mark McDermott hoop created some breathing room.
Gorton finished with 24 points, and McDermott scored 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.
Unatego held a 36-34 lead at halftime receiving 15 points from Cody Comenda. Comenda had just two points after halftime.
“We did a much better job defensively in the second half,” said Greene coach Jeff Paske. “We’re similar teams, the difference is that we had Mark on the inside. It’s good to get to the finals with a chance to win it. We’ve haven’t won this tournament before.”
The Trojans meet Dryden tonight at 8:30 p.m.

BAINBRIDGE – Bainbridge-Guilford won for the first time this season placing four kids in double figures in its highest scoring game in two seasons.
“We didn’t shoot that well from outside, but nine three-pointers makes up the difference,” said B-G coach Ben Nelson. “We took care of the ball on offense better than we have been, and the defense was pretty good.”
Steve Patten’s 18 points led B-G (1-4). Ryan Porter was next with 15, Justin Pepper had 12 points to go with 21 rebounds, and Travis Colburn netted 11.

SOUTH OTSELIC – Otselic Valley finished its first month of play with seven wins beating George Jr. Republic Tuesday night in a competitive non-league game.
Chris Neal finished with 15 points and eight assists, his most complete game of the season. Dusty Davis scored 12, Karl Graham drained a season-high 10 points, and Matt Williams scored nine points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
“They had some good, athletic kids with a level of quickness we don’t see much,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “We had a hard time stopping them. Fortunately, we were able to get a little bit of a lead in the fourth, and hang on.”
OV’s record improved to 7-2 overall.

OXFORD – Relying on a stingy defense, Oxford held Unatego to 13 points through three quarters, and dealt the Spartans their first loss of the season on Tuesday.
Blackhawks junior, Haley Witchella, had 17 points, 14 rebounds, and four blocked shots to lead the Oxford offense.
“Every game, it starts with defense for us,” said Oxford second-year coach, Chris Palmer. “Our offense is a work and progress, and we had some good ball movement. We have a ways to go, but I see the improvement.”
Oxford took control of the game in the third quarter. Alyshia Crawford sarted the half with a three-pointer from the right corner, and Oxford scored 11 straight points, seven from Witchella, to establish a 32-11 lead.
Sarah Mannina and Stephanie Havens scored eight points apiece for Unatego, whose record fell to 4-1 on the season.

NORWICH – State-ranked Chenango Valley shook off Norwich’s fast start to win Tuesday’s dual meet at Jack Jones Gymnasium.
Tristan Rifanburg (103) began with a pinfall, and Tanner Cummings (112) added a forfeit win for the Tornado. It wasn’t until Keegan Levesque’s win by fall at 189 pounds that Norwich earned another win.
“We figured this was going to be tough, and some of our better kids were matched up against their tougher kids,” said Norwich coach Joe Downey. “It didn’t help us points-wise. We’re still looking for other guys to step up and give us more points.”
Wrestling exhibition, exchange student Julian Hinz won his first-ever wrestling match, and heavyweight Chandler Rifanburg also garnered his first victory.
Norwich will take a handful of its top wrestlers to the Windsor Tournament on Dec. 28-29.

Noah Huff (119), Steve Young (125), and Greg DuVall (140) all accumulated points as the lead grew to 30-3. “The kids made weight and we were able to build up enough of a lead for us to hold on,” said S-E assistant coach Brian Hicks.

NORWICH – State-ranked Chenango Valley shook off Norwich’s fast start to win Tuesday’s dual meet at Jack Jones Gymnasium.
Tristan Rifanburg (103) began with a pinfall, and Tanner Cummings (112) added a forfeit win for the Tornado. It wasn’t until Keegan Levesque’s win by fall at 189 pounds that Norwich earned another win.
“We figured this was going to be tough, and some of our better kids were matched up against their tougher kids,” said Norwich coach Joe Downey. “It didn’t help us points-wise. We’re still looking for other guys to step up and give us more points.”
Wrestling exhibition, exchange student Julian Hinz won his first-ever wrestling match, and heavyweight Chandler Rifanburg also garnered his first victory.
Norwich will take a handful of its top wrestlers to the Windsor Tournament on Dec. 28-29.

CANASTOTA – Sherburne-Earlville won its fourth dual meet of the season jumping out to big lead over Canastota in Tuesday’s road matchup.
Brothers Tyi and Spencer Frankin began with pinfall wins for the Marauders at 103 and 112 pounds respectively. Noah Huff (119), Steve Young (125), and Greg DuVall (140) all accumulated points as the lead grew to 30-3. “The kids made weight and we were able to build up enough of a lead for us to hold on,” said S-E assistant coach Brian Hicks.
The Marauders compete at Oneonta’s tournament on Jan. 2-3.
