M'ville students show support for troops with care packages
NORWICH – Representing both the Norwich and Morrisville campuses of Morrisville State College, the Student Government Organization (SGO) continues to seek donations for its Troop Care Package project, in an effort to show appreciation to American soldiers stationed overseas.
The SGO is an integral part of student activities at Morrisville State College, serving the entire student body, according to the college’s website, and seeks to promote the general welfare of the student body, stimulating interest in activities contributing to cultural, social and educational improvement.
“Since we have students on both campuses who have served, or have family and friends who have served or are serving in the military, we decided this project would be a great way to express our gratitude and support to those protecting our freedom,” said Jeri O’Bryan-Losee, coordinator for Academic Support Services at the Norwich Campus, who is leading the local effort.
The first shipment of donations, which went to the 57th Military Police Company in Iraq, were sent on Nov. 11, in honor of Veterans’ Day. The project, originally scheduled to run for a single semester, has “succeeded far beyond expectations,” according to O’Bryan-Losee.
“We had planned on sending 40 packages in all, but because of the tremendous support we’ve received, we will continue to send packages as long as donations are coming in.”
A list of donatable items can be found at www.morrisville.edu, and includes food, games, music, toiletries and correspondence, among many others. Monetary donations, for the purchase of items, or to cover the shipping costs of the care package, are also welcome.
Checks should be made payable to the Norwich Campus Student Government Organization and sent to Jeri O’Bryan-Losee, Norwich Campus, 20 Conkey Avenue, Norwich, NY 13815.
