Mayor, aldermen sworn in for 2010

NORWICH – The Common Council met Monday night for its annual organizational meeting, the first council gathering of the new year. Prior to the meeting, William Roberts, city clerk and director of finance, administered the oath of office to re-elected officials.
Aldermen Terry Bresina, Walter Schermerhorn and Robert Jeffrey, along with Mayor Joseph Maiurano, were sworn in at 7 p.m. at One Court Plaza, in the council chambers.
Following the adoption of the rules of procedure for 2010, Mayor Maiurano appointed Aldermen Schermerhorn, Jeffrey and Laughlin to the finance and personnel committee, and Aldermen Bresina, Carey and Deierlein to the public works and safety committee. Aldermen Schermerhorn and Bresina chair each committee, respectively.
Nominations for president of the council and acting mayor, both one year terms ending Dec. 31, 2010, named Alderman Bresina president of the Common Council and Alderman Jeffrey acting mayor. Both nominations were adopted unanimously.
Re-appointments to the traffic, planning, and parks commissions, along with the electrical, plumbing, youth, zoning and water boards were also unanimously adopted. All commission and board terms expire Dec. 31, 2012.
Aldermen Schermerhorn and Laughlin moved, and seconded, the designation of The Evening Sun as the official paper for the City of Norwich, and NBT, M & T, Key and Wilber National banks as the official depositories for the city funds. Both designations were also unanimously adopted.
“At this time, I thank the citizens of the city for having the confidence to let me serve as your mayor,” said Maiurano. “I am very fortunate to have professional department heads and their staff, who work beyond their duties to provide quality services. I cannot thank them enough.”
The mayor went on to thank the common council, saying they’ve positively and intelligently discussed matters to find the best solutions for the city’s challenges, and thanked volunteers serving on the city commissions and area businesses, which he said are the backbone of support that make this community special.
“2009 was a very challenging time for the city, but because of a positive attitude and responsible planning, we were able to, and will continue to, provide quality services to our citizens,” stated the mayor.
A complete state of the city report will be provided later this month.
