Greene races to early lead in blowout victory over Unadilla Valley

NEW BERLIN – Greene raced to a 49-14 halftime lead, and finished with four players in double figures in a rout of Unadilla Valley Wednesday.
Scott Gorton nailed five three-pointers in the second quarter on his way to a game-high 27 points. Brendan Kinne scored seven in the opening quarter, and finished with a career-high 20 points. “We didn’t handle the ball well when we ran our offense,” said UV coach Matt Osborne. “We turned it over, and they were quick getting up and down the floor.”
Mark McDermott posted a 13-point night, and Kyle Gorton came off the bench to score a season-best 11 points.
Mike Schowe scored 11 points to lead UV.

Oxford 62, Hancock 33
OXFORD – A defensive adjustment in the second quarter lit a fire under Oxford, who turned a once tight game into a blowout by the end of the third quarter.
The change to a one-three-one zone defense confounded the Wildcats, who finished 9-for-44 from the field. “We were able to get some easy baskets in transition out of our defense,” said Oxford coach Tim Davis. “Once we made the switch, Hancock really struggled.”
By contrast, the Blackhawks hit 52 percent of their shots (28-for-54) led by Cory Seiler’s 19 points. John Wonka had a season-best 10 points, while Booker Davis and Zach Barry also netted 10 points apiece. Every player on the Oxford roster had at least one basket, the first time that has happened this season.
The Blackhawks play at Harpursville Saturday afternoon.

SAUQUOIT – With its two leading scorers, Bridget Irwin and and Caitlynn Adams, combining for just 12 points, Sherburne-Earlville received welcomed scoring for two backup players in Wednesday’s road victory.
Nicole Carpenter came off the bench to net a season-best 12 points, and Samantha Hill added 10 points and eight rebounds in a reserve role.
Kristi Vibbard led S-E with 19 points, 12 of those in the first half when S-E (8-2) constructed a 33-20 lead. “Luckily, when a couple of our kids were not on, we had people step up and make some shots for us,” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan.

FRANKLIN – Playing its first league game in nearly three weeks, G-MU came back from an early deficit to defeat Franklin on the road Wednesday.
Down 15-7 in the second quarter, Miranda Hill came off the bench to score six points, and had eight of her 10 in the first half as the Raiders (3-1, 5-3) took a 16-15 lead into halftime.
Tanya Barnes scored 10 in the third and Brianne Lambert six of her 12 as the lead was extended to 10 points. Lambert also had 18 rebounds, and Barnes finished with 14 points and six steals.
G-MU head coach Jim Johnson credited the defensive effort of Courtney Hillman on Franklin’s leading scorer, Jordan Beers. “(Courtney) made Beers work for everything she had tonight,” Johnson said.

RICHFIELD SPRINGS – Richfield Springs overcame Otselic Valley’s victory bid outscoring the Vikings by six points in the final quarter to pull out the win.
OV’s Taylor Monroe scored 13 points, and the Vikes took a one-point lead into the fourth quarter after a strong third stanza. “I think the fourth quarter, it came down to us being a young team,” said OV coach Danielle Graham. “We hustled really hard in this game, and we rebounded like we were 10 feet tall. We look forward to the next time we play them.”
OV plays at New York Mills on Friday.

S-E 35, Camden 25
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville moved nearly every wrestler in its lineup up one and in some cases two weight classes, and did so with great success in Wednesday’s win.
Dakota Nelson (171) edged Camden’s Kevin Davis, 8-6, as the Marauders won the first four matches to build a 21-0 lead. “We wanted to give everyone a break (from making weight) before the Ilion Tournament this weekend, and everyone wrestled very well,” said S-E assistant coach Brian Hicks.
Tyi and Spencer Franklin pulled off unique matching victories at 103 and 112 pounds respectively. Each wrestler won major decisions by 19-7 counts.

NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley improved its dual meet record to 5-1 on Wednesday defeating Harpursville.
Zach Montgomery (160) gave UV the lead pinning Zach Warren in the match’s second bout in 5:16. “That win was big for us,” said UV coach Jim DuVall of Montgomery’s win. “Warren’s a tough kid, and we were able to get the pin.”
Tyler Olson (103) and Lucas Lyons (112) earned first-period pins for the Storm to essentially clinch the dual meet victory.
“We’re a young team, and it’s hard to say what you will get at times,” DuVall said. “Overall, I’m pretty proud of how we wrestled. We were aggressive and wrestled fairly clean.”

BAINBRIDGE – B-G/Afton fell behind early, but rolled through the middle weights to defeat Unatego in Tuesday’s matchup.
Danny Gormley (130), who will compete in the Eastern States Classic this coming weekend in Middletown, pinned the Spartans’ David Carman in 5:30. Gormley, who is expected to wrestle the ESC at 125 pounds, will compete in a division that expects to have 16 state place finishers including two-time state champion Nick Wilcox of Greene.

Afton’s Stacy Guokas had 10 kills, and Cassie Prezorski put forth an all-around effort finishing with 17 assists, five kills, and five aces.
Afton’s record improved to 3-6 on the season.
