Norwich wrestlers make strides in loss to Windsor

Wrestling

Windsor 54, Norwich 12
NORWICH – Norwich was unable to make it two dual meet wins in three days, but showed improvement in spite of a lopsided final score, said NHS first-year coach Joe Downey.
“Yes, we lost, but we wrestled great tonight, and I saw a lot of good stuff out of our wrestlers,” Downey said.
Among the noteworthy efforts pointed out by Downey:
• Zach Ketchum (130) took down defending Section IV champion Colton Perry, who was third in the state a year ago.
• First-year wrestler Anthony Vitello (140) battled through six minutes against Windsor’s Frank Kennedy before losing a decision.
• Damian Marvin (145) wrestled the two best periods of his season, albeit in a loss.
• Cody Bradbury (152) chalked up another win for the Tornado, one of three by the Tornado.
• And Keegan Levesque (215) was bumped up from his usual weight class of 189 pounds, and lost a narrow decision to the section’s top 215-pounder, Noah Sibley, 3-0.
Perhaps the highlight of Norwich’s night was Frankie Garcia avenging a Windsor Tournament loss at 103 pounds. Garcia, who was pinned by the Black Knights’ Jesse Holton in the finals of that tourney, won a 7-1 decision. Leading 2-0 entering the third period, Garcia reversed Holton and scored back points to gain a commanding lead.
“Frankie’s win was huge, especially for seeding in sectionals,” Downey said. “He wrestled with a lot of heart and determination.”
Norwich competes in the Leo J. Sammon Memorial Tournament at Ilion this weekend.

Boys’ Swimming

Greene 88, Cooperstown 82
GREENE – Greene preserved its long-standing Midstate Athletic Conference winning streak extending the skein to 46 straight meet wins with a nail-biter over Cooperstown Thursday.
The meet was virtually deadlocked entering the last three events. The Trojans, despite losing two of the last three races, extended its margin with a one-three-four finish in the 100-yard breaststroke. George Flanagan won the breaststroke, one of his three wins on the day.
“Eleven out of our 23 swimmers are either freshmen or first-year swimmers, so there is a lot more teaching and coaching this year,” said Greene coach Mike Platta. “We’re relying a lot more on our second- third- and fourth-place finishes. There is no unimportant race, lane or swimmer.”
Greene (4-0, 5-2) is back in action next Thursday at Sherburne-Earlville.

AFTON – Afton took the top two spots in the 100-yard breaststroke and 500-yard freestyle, and added three scoring swimmers in the 100-yard butterfly for the first time this season in a meet win over Sherburne-Earlville Thursday.
“We were coming off a lot of personal-best times in our last meet against Chenango Valley, so we were swimming a little flat tonight,” said Makos coach Kevin Diefenbacher. “We pulled together and got through it.”
The host club’s Kurt Rogler, Rob McLean, Shane Schneidau, and Nate Cutting all had multiple victories on the day. Afton/B-G/H/S will break in the Sidney pool in Tuesday’s non-league matchup with Windsor. Diefenbacher said it’s the first-ever varsity meet hosted by Sidney High School.
