Five local gridders named to all-state teams

SYRACUSE – The New York State Sportswriters Association announced its 2009 Class B, C, and D all-state football teams this week, and five Chenango County athletes – each one an All-County pick – were selected.
Norwich senior Andrew Austin was named second-team all-state at defensive back. Austin led Norwich in interceptions, was among the team leaders in tackles, and led NHS in receiving.
Greene’s Brendan Kinne and Evan Engler were Class C all-state picks. Kinne, an offensive end, and Engler, and offensive lineman, earned third-team all-state honors.
In Class D, Oxford receiver Jeremy Nelson, who led the area in receiving yards, was a second-team choice at offensive end. Justin Pepper, Bainbridge-Guilford’s star linebacker and two-year starting quarterback, made the grade as a third-team all-state pick on defense.
