Assemblyman Crouch hosts region’s natural gas drilling supporters
CHENANGO BRIDGE – About 100 leaders from state government, commerce, the natural gas industry and land coalition groups gathered at a conference Thursday at the offices of New York State Assemblyman Clifford W. Crouch.
Those represented pledged their support of exploring for the clean-burning fuel in New York State and encouraged the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to complete the Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement by the spring, calling for drilling to resume in all gas producing formations by the summer of 2010.
“I’m supportive of drilling and the NYSDEC has gone through a very deliberate process of addressing the comments and concerns of people before they hand out permits,” said Assemblyman Crouch this morning.
Those present were leaders of the Joint Landowners Coalition representing 27 landowner coalitions in Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Erie, Madison, Otsego, Steuben and Tioga counties that have more than 700,000 acres available for gas exploration ad development.
“We recognize that New York State has an enormous source of untapped economic potential in its shale gas formations. We hold enough natural gas to heat our homes, spur our economy, and reduce our dependence on foreign oil for decades to come. Safely producing this efficient, abundant and environmentally clean fuel will bring thousands of jobs and billions of dollars to New York,” a press released stated.
Those attending from Chenango County included: Commerce Chenango President Maureen Carpenter, Chenango County Natural Gas Consultant Steven Palmatier, Oxford Land Group President Bryant Latourette and Richard Lasky and Brian Conover of the Central New York Landowners Coalition.
“The meeting was excellent and even had Donna Lupardo, Kevin McCabe and other highlighted politicians who haven't yet been on the positive side of this drilling venture,” said Conover, a member of his Coalition’s steering committee. “They were faced with the science of drilling and fracking today which, hopefully, will override the sensationalism they have been hearing for quite some time.”
