Greene volleyball team avenges one of two division losses

GREENE – Greene won the final two games in a five-game battle, and avenged one of its two league losses, Tuesday against Sidney.
Devyn Staley had 14 kills, and Leah Kazalski proved a pinpoint setter with 24 assists. The Trojans (13-2) outlasted Sidney, 29-27, in the fourth game to set up a strong finish. “In that fourth game, we fought them point for point,” said Greene coach Michelle Schieve. “Our offense gained momentum as the games went on. We got some quality serving and kills when we needed them.”

NEW BERLIN – After four back-and-fourth games, Unadilla Valley dominated the decisive fifth game led by the dominant serving of Jackie Goda and Amanda Geier to defeat Delhi Tuesday.
Goda had 11 service points in the last game and Geier eight. Geier led the Storm with nine aces and Goda had eight.
Torrie French and Amanda Tumilowicz shared UV’s team-high with six kills apiece.
UV hosts Greene on Friday.

The NHS JV swept Forks 5-0, and moved into first place in STAC Central Division play.

GREENE – Alex Trass figured in all three Greene victories, but it was not enoug to overcome the Purple Tornado in Tuesday’s non-league matchup.
Trass won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races, and competed on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay.
Norwich countered with top-flight performances from Trey Ostrom and Talon Schroeder, each of whom had a pair of individual-event wins for Norwich (4-3-1).
“Jon Aikins (Norwich coach) is doing a tremendous job with the Norwich program,” said Greene coach Mike Platta. “He’s one of the best young coaches in Section IV, and it’s only a matter of time before he starts to produce powerhouse teams like the ones Norwich had when he swam for them.”
Greene’s record dropped to 6-3 overall – all three defeats coming in non-league meets.

CNY Wrestling Tournament
VERNON – Sherburne-Earlville won two individual titles, and placed sixth out of 17 teams at last weekend’s CNY Wrestling Tournament hosted by Vernon-Verona-Sherrill.
Greg DuVall (135) remained unbeaten to win the first title, and Danny Cleveland (145) continued his strong comeback campaign winning some championship hardware. Cleveland, who missed nearly all of last season with an injury, beat the number one seed in the section – and tournament – Ron Stann of Adirondack, 10-8. Cleveland also beat the number two seed in the tournament.
“As far as we were concerned, (Danny) was the most outstanding wrestler,” said S-E assistant coach Brian Hicks, who said that top honor went to someone else. “He wrestled well and it was a great tournament win.”
Tyi Franklin (103) added a second-place finish, and Dakota Nelson (152) took third.
