Businesses, local celebrities, and cookie experts come together to support the Children’s Center

NORWICH – Local celebrities from the Norwich Fire Chief to the Queen of Cookies have come forward this month to support the 2nd Annual Night of Cookies and Cream, the Children’s Center fundraiser to support the scholarship fund program. The event to be held on Thursday at the Norwich Fire Station will welcome the community and their families to enjoy free cookies and milk and to auction freshly baked cookies by noted local celebrities.
Martha Brower-Ryan, fundraising campaign chair, commented about the effort; “In December we sent letters to nominated local celebrities asking them to donate a batch of their favorite cookies. On the night of January 28th, cookie jars filled with their homemade cookies will be displayed and auctioned to raise funds that will help families with low income offset the cost of child care at the Children’s Center.” According to the Children’s Center Director Darlene Anderson, the percentage of total families served by the scholarship fund jumped from 48% in 2008 to 98% in 2009 coinciding with the financial challenges faced nationally.

In addition, Celebrity Cookies will compete to win the Celebrity Cookie Award granted to the batch of cookies deemed the best by a group of culinary and cookie baking judges. Among the judges this year are; Gerri Barnes – Owner The Café Connection, Mary Moore – Owner Crossroads Café, Sue Grenier and Betsie Greeley – Casual Catering, Diane Shedd – Cook at the Children’s Center, Katha Root – Director WIC Program Opportunities for Chenango and Mary Webb – Coordinator Broad St. United Methodist Church’s soup kitchen.
National Business organizations like Newman’s Own foundation provided free organic cookies, and McDonald’s Restaurant donated individually packaged milk to distribute to children. The Sidney-Norwich Pennysaver and Central New York Radio Group came forward to support the event. “The valuable contributions of these business organizations are critical to the success of this event,” said Brower-Ryan about the business support received.
The fundraiser event will be held on Thursday at the Norwich Fire House from 7 p.m. Executive Director Dr. Jane Coddington explained the purpose of the event, “The event marks the kick off of our fundraiser campaign. This year’s financial goal is to raise $24,000 to fund three scholarship slots. This fund helps offset the cost of child care at the Children’s Center for families with financial need which now comprises 98% of all the children served by the Center. Our organization looks forward to the same warm support we received in 2009 and encourages everyone to support the many celebrities, volunteers and organizations who are coming forward to help us achieve our goal.” More information about the event can be found at their website at www .thechildrencenter.org.
