Portions of Stillwater Road closed following yesterday’s storms

CHENANGO COUNTY – A roughly four-mile section of County Road 32 from Squirrel Hill Road in the Town of Greene south to the Broome County line remains closed today due to water run off and debris from the storm which dropped over an inch and a half of rain in that region of the county Monday.
According to Emergency Management Officer A. Wesley Jones, the roadway, also known as Stillwater Road, will be reassessed today to determine how much longer it will remain closed.
While the portion of County Road 32 is the only one in the county to be closed as a result of the storm, Jones said culverts in other areas did become clogged with debris, causing water to run across the roadways.
“Most of them appear to be minor,” he stated, commending road crews for their efforts to keep roads clear.
The rain was accompanied by high winds, according to Jones, which led to scattered power outages throughout the county.
In the northern part of the county, which recieved approximately 1 inch of precipitation, rainfall coupled with runoff from melting snow led to near-flood conditions in Sherburne. According to Jones, the Chenango River crested overnight at 8.47 feet at the Sherburne gauge. Flood level is 8.5 feet, he explained.
Prior to the rain, the river had been at approximately 2.5 feet.
Canasawacta Creek rose from 3 feet to 15 feet during the course of the day, according to measurements taken at the creek’s Plymouth gauge, Jones said. The most dramatic rise occurred around noon yesterday.
“There was one point when it rose 3 feet in 20 minutes,” he explained.
