Funeral today for trooper killed in crash

AMHERST, N.Y. (AP) – The first female New York state trooper to die while on duty is being laid to rest in western New York.
The funeral service for Jill Mattice is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Eastern Hills Wesleyan Church in Amherst, near Buffalo.
Police say the 31-year-old trooper was driving a cruiser back to the Oneonta barracks from her assignment at Unadilla Valley School last week when she collided with a tractor-trailer in the Otsego County town of Morris.
Troopers say it appears Mattice drifted into the oncoming lane. The accident remains under investigation.
The Cheektowaga native was a six-year veteran of the state police and had worked as a school resource officer the past 2 1/2 years. She was married with no children.
Gov. David Paterson is expected to attend the funeral.
