Yogurt manufacturer donates $50,000 to Haiti relief effort

NEW BERLIN – Agro Farma, the New Berlin-based company which produces Chobani Greek-style yogurt, announced Tuesday their intention to donate $50,000 to Haiti relief efforts.
According to company officials, the donation will be divided between the American Red Cross ($30,000), UNICEF ($10,000) and Doctors Without Borders ($10,000).
“The devastation in Haiti struck all of us at Chobani and deeply impacted our local Central New York community. It is simply heart-breaking,” said Agro Farma president Hamdi Ulukaya, in a statement issued yesterday.
The Caribbean nation, which occupies the western third of the island of Hispaniola, was hit by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake shortly before 5 p.m. on Jan. 12. The quake, considered by experts to be the worst to hit the region in two centuries, took an estimated 200,000 lives, injured some 194,000 people and left approximately 1 million Haitians homeless.
“Haiti needs a global helping hand and it’s important to us as a company and as a dedicated community partner to assist in the recovery process however we can,” Ulukaya said.
Agro Farma is encouraging Chobani customers to also contribute to the cause. Links to each of the organizations they have chosen to support are provided at www.chobani.com/haiti.
According to the Associated Press, more than $1 billion has been donated to the relief effort by various governments to date, including $316 million from the United States. Another $470 million in donations has been collected through private U.S. charities.
Since it was founded in 2005, Agro Farma’s policy has been to donate 10 percent of its annual profits to non-profit organizations and events. Thirty percent of that amount is earmarked specifically to the local community.
“Chobani yogurt is nothing but good, and that is also the mission for the company,” Ulukaya explained. “Our goal is to provide consumers with great products, create amazing new jobs and give back to our community.”
According to Nicki Briggs, who handles nutritional communications and marketing for Agro Farma, local groups which have received funding through the charitable giving program include the New Berlin Art Forum, American Legion Auxiliary, Unadilla Valley Central School District’s “Project Santa,” the American Heart Association and the Carol House in Sidney.
