Cub Scouts celebrate 100 years
NORWICH – Local Cub Scout Pack 62 has a number of activities planned for the winter of 2010, in celebration of the 100-year anniversary of Cub Scouts of America, as part of the Boy Scouts of America. Since 1910, the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of America have provided youths with the knowledge they need to prosper morally, physically, and educationally in their communities.
“We have so much going on,” said Pack 62 Cubmaster Kisten Giglio. “On January 30 we’ll be holding our annual Pinewood Derby, and we’re also hosting the Chenango District Derby on March 20.”
Giglio added that all of the scout troops in the Chenango district, some of which meet in Broome County, will be invited to the March 20 derby, which challenges scouts to build and race pinewood race cars.
In addition to its February candy bar sale, Cub Scout Pack 62 will hold its winter fundraiser from 5 to 9 on Feb. 11 at the local Pizza Hut, stated Giglio.
“Every customer that mentions they’re there to support Pack 62 will be helping out,” said Giglio. “A portion of every purchase they make will go towards our pack, helping to off-set some of our costs.”
Pack 62’s Food for Scouting campaign will kick off on Feb. 20, a community program which has been missing in recent years, according to Giglio. The local scouts will be dropping off informational flyers and plastic bags in an effort to collect canned goods and other non-perishable food items, to be picked up on Feb. 27.
“This is just a great way to help out the local food pantries, the community and our charter, the Episcopal Church,” stated Giglio. “We’re also combining the food drive with a bottle drive, for those interested.”
Giglio reported that Cub Scout Pack 62 meets Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m., at the Episcopal Church on West Main Street, and that community members are welcome to stop in and see what scouting is all about. Anyone with questions concerning the food and bottle drive, or for more information on the Cub Scouts of America, may contact Kisten Giglio at 316-0999.
